Beertography Experiment

This month we decided to experiment with some beertography (beer photography) with selections from local Philly and New Jersey breweries.

  • Evil Genius Beer Company (Philadelphia, PA)
  • Yards Brewing Company (Philadelphia, PA)
  • Flying Fish (Somerdale, NJ)
  • Commonwealth Ciders. (Kensington, PA)

Staying local with the beer companies was important because even with our experimental and test shoot we get an opportunity to show support to other Philly companies while showcasing the great beers/ciders in the area.

Using these techniques, we were able to achieve awesome shots that displayed the bottle in the best light:

Lighting Combinations

Taking advantage of multiple lighting equipment including strobe lights and a portable flash, we lit different parts of the bottle, so we could achieve a consistent appealing glow.

We took photos of different parts of the bottle and in post-production combined them all together.

This technique allows us to focus solely on one part of the bottle making it as appealing as possible. With most beer photographs they have a glow with mist on the bottle. By focusing on each part of the bottle separately, it allowed us to get a consistent glow around the whole bottle.

Added Texture

For a final aesthetic touch, we sprayed the bottles with water. This “artificial” condensation on the bottles helped to create an enhanced appeal of refreshment while allowing us to control the amount of moisture on each bottle.

Even if we are a professional corporate film and photography firm, the art of photography is still a love of ours. Experimenting with different sets ups, techniques, and equipment is something we often do. This keeps our work innovative and gives us a chance to try techniques that can enhance client work moving forward. Make sure to check back often for more photography techniques and experimental shoots.
